This self-portrait started as a surprise for my boys but turned out to be my choice for this week’s class assignment. I picked up James Dean from Everett this morning since my older son is doing his essay presentation on James Dean at his school tomorrow. I decided to pose with him while I have a chance. It took a lot of changes in settings and posing before I finally got what I was happy with. It also required a change of attitude to finally get there! First, I thought, this is a photo without the real me since I’m definitely not an actor, not a rebel and probably the only thing James and I shared is our love for the red jacket. I think that’s a cigarette on his hand and I have a red pen for correcting my son’s papers. But what this reveals about myself is my sense of humor and my commitment to helping out my kids. My spouse and my kids don’t think of me this way. But my sisters and closest friends from high school know how silly I can be. There, I have outed myself! This also shows how much I would go out of my way to help out my son. He saw this cut-out from the store in Seattle about a week ago but did not buy it then. By this week-end, it was sold out and my son was so upset since he really wanted it as his props for his presentation. I know he worked hard on his extended essay. I went online to search for James, found him in the Everett store and drove out there to pick him up. I wanted my son to be successful with his endeavors and, if I can help out (as long as he does his part in presenting well), I always try. I also learned a lot from my son about James Dean. You can always learn when you listen.
I agree with Nita, Leia - you are a great mom! I bet your son was pretty thrilled with this and that he loves the picture sharing the silly side of you.
This is a fun selfie and I also love the red jacket!
