Tower of Oudelande
The first mention of a church dating back to Oudelande circa 1275. Probably at that time been a chapel in the village, which in the 15 e century church is exalted. This was for the Reformation period dedicated to St. Eligius.
The Reformed Church of Oudelande dates from the last quarter of the 14 e century. The tower of the church was built around 1400.
At the beginning of the 17 e century the church was so dilapidated that had to be done a great restoration. Parts of the comprehensive land had to be sold to pay for this restoration.
The north transept was demolished in 1769 and the choir was closed.
On May 20, 1925 during a church service the lightning struck the tower. There were no injuries in this, but the material damage was considerable.
The tower bells in World War II confiscated by the Germans. They were later found and placed again.
In 1962 the church was restored again
About the village : After running a test for one year, the city council decided to remove all traffic signs to improve the look of the historical village.
Thank you Ferry for your nice comments. I particularly love the reflections in the window. the one is the former/old City Hall of Toronto. I'll see if I have a picture of it in my files. if not, I take one of it at a later date and upload if for you. another wonderful picture of a church and the clock tower.
Fascinating shot and story. Sometimes I think they can remove all the traffic signs here - some people just couldn't care less, very sad. Many accidents occur because of that.
@kelly2@sangwann@kategoring There is only a speed limit sign on the entrance of this village . ( 30 km/19 miles / hour ).The amount of collisions has decrease after.
What wonderful information about the history of this amazingly old church, Ferry! I think I especially liked that all traffic signs were removed to improve the appearance of the surroundings! It shows a lineage of respect and admiration for the antiquity of this place! Lovely!
