Jacobus church Renesse Holland

Jacobuskerk Renesse
The James Church is a Gothic church, built in the L6e century. It is not the first church on this site. There must already have been one, probably Romanesque chapel. Because in the "Present state of the United Provinces countries" (1753) is mentioned, which was buried in 1207 a certain Jan van Renesse for the main altar of the church of Renesse. The main altar was dedicated to Jacobus Maior, the saint of Santiago de Compostela Elijah.

The tower is owned by the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland and is probably built before 1458, regardless of the Romanesque chapel. In fact the tower hangs a loud bell Pieter van Dormen from 1458, with the edge lettering Salva Trix seculi, Stella Maris succure ora nobis (savior of the century, star of the sea, be our help). The present church in the 16th century against the tower aangebouwd.Vanaf the north side is good to see the tower with attached octagonal staircase tower. This is a symbol of Mary with her child. Also on the north side is a cistern, which was formerly in dry summers for two cents could draw a bucket of water. On the South side is an annex added for the sake of the usefulness of the church, with boiler, kitchen and toilet. In the West Facade addition to the tower a large cross, an anchor and a heart cemented, the symbols of faith, hope and love . Here was formerly a fire engine house. The firemen practiced twice a year and were previously 10 cents. When that was increased to 25 cents, the then alderman: 'But they can not all come. " On the other side of the tower was formerly the "preson", named by the local youth crooks shack. A single drunkard had to sometimes sleep it off. With more serious offenses the offender was brought to Zierikzee by the constable. Both installations such happy demolished.

The church has a single-aisled nave with a wooden arbor. Behind the organ can still be seen that the intention was to build a large matching choir, but that never happened, because the plans were by the Reformation in the freezer and an altar was no longer necessary. The smaller choir was separated from the church by a wooden partition and is now used as a school. In the early 20th century there was a three Classes school in its place. After the opening of a new school in 1970 elsewhere in the village restoration of church and choir is well taken in hand. In which restoration is a part recovered from a holy water font, which is walled on the north side next to the old output. The pulpit is from the Church of Elkerzee, which was demolished after the 1953 disaster. The pulpit is attached an hourglass. The lectern dates from 1745. Next to the pulpit is painted iron box from the 17th century, which was previously stored in the communion silver.

For the pulpit, in the "garden" Amongst others, the gravestones of the preacher-physician C.Tessing and Adriaan Tromp. In his noble life Schout of Glory of Renesse and Oosterban van der Duyne, together with dike warden of the Wester-fourth of the country Fireplaces and so on.Deceased the sixth of August 1754. To see very old altar stone under the communion table are five crosses, memory of the five wounds of Jesus. Above the pulpit is the organ, which in 1882 was built by the Oberlinger firm in Windesheim for the German Evangelical Gemeinde in Rotterdam.

In 1938 it was taken over by the Reformed Church of Renesse. The organ was dismantled and placed under adverse weather conditions by handcart, boat and steam train to Renesse. It has been restored several times and now has 930 pipes. Until 1905, the schoolmaster / cantor led the congregation, then to 1939, there was a two-manual pedal harmonium.

How nice to take a photo tour around the church, Ferry! It strikes me that here are no trees or garden growing around it. Is that typical? Just wondering!
