In oude oorkonden werd Nisse geschreven als: Gebernisse, Gherbrechtenesse, Gerbernesse of Gerbergnisse. Later werd dit Ter Nisse en afgekort tot Nisse. Het woord ‘nes’ komt van neus. Op topografischekaarten is deze vorm ook goed te zien.
