The crop is wheat.
In 1953 with the great flood disaster, we were confronted with the usefulness of the sleeper dykes. In the areas where these had been excavated, the disaster was much more serious.
Human ingenuity at work. Beautiful site.

A sad story. After all the work that goes into working these expansive fields and in a second you have lost everything. A beautiful scene you have captured though and a great lesson.

@sangwann, We rebuild it, better and saver. And prepare for the worse weather conditions. Learn the lesson the hard way.

A lovely shot! Good to read that the old dykes are kept as a second line of defence, making things even safer. Fav!

Thank goodness for the dikes. In the summer 1980 the water of the Maas ( Niftrik) came so high that our caravans were under water. We watched everything from the top of the dike and luckily the dikes kept the water to one side and saved the town. The dutch are (one of) the best.
