21st May 1945: hanging about

"The following day, we were told to be on hand in case more planes arrived in which case we might possibly leave.

We sat out on the airfield for 9 solid hours waiting for planes which did not come.

Whilst out there, Bill and I met two Americans, ’Shorty’ and ‘Left’ who had slept next to us at Zinnwald. They had plenty of food and gave Bill and me each a large tin of sliced bacon and some cigarettes. I swapped one tin for some bread and we were able to make sandwiches.

Towards late evening, we abandoned all hope of leaving that day and so instead of trudging all the way back to our hut, four of us slept in one lorry.

Before turning in, we had a shower bath in a large tent and afterwards made a soup from odds and ends. I remember the soup had lots of curry in it and it was something to warm us.

We were soon asleep in the lorry and managed to keep quite warm too."
