Photos and text from my friend, Jane, one brave lady. Jane does a cycle ride each year to raise funds for Christian Aid. This year she had an additional challenge.
"I have cycled across Switzerland this year for Christian Aid because My husband Jim would have wanted me to continue.
He was always my most faithful supporter in raising funds for those in need especially in the Developing Countries where he had worked so effectively to improve Education.
I planned my Christian Aid Ride to Switzerland this year before his recent sudden decline and death. I know he was with me in Spirit and helped me up the biggest mountains! I felt they brought me close to him.
I felt really lucky to cycle through such wonderful scenery and was surprised and pleased to find that I could still manage the big mountains....albeit much more slowly than in the past and without hesitating to get off and push when it got REALLY steep!!
I cycled 1,031 miles (1,650kms) in just over 2 weeks starting and ending in Zurich.
The weather was very good ....somewhat TOO hot (30 degrees) some days...and only a couple of days of rain. I met with so much kindness reinforcing my belief in humanity and in God’s goodness. I was very impressed by the courtesy of Swiss motorists who seemed happy to share road space with cyclists and pedestrians even in big towns. The cycle routes were outstanding....well signposted; largely tarmac surfaces; often quite separate from the road and sometimes having dedicated tunnels through sheer rock faces. Swiss engineering is quite amazing, achieving access to some very difficult and remote terrain.
A wonderful experience...and a lovely welcome back home to find that I had contributed so much to Christian Aid.
Jim would be immensely pleased to think of the help this will give to the many developing countries in which he worked so hard.....Thank you everyone again."
Jane's total raised for this solo cycle ride currently stands at £3,700.
