Brother John emailed me to say his daughter had visited him and ordered 'The Book' from Amazon (I've stopped calling it 'Till We Meet Again Gunner Bert Martin' - a bit of a mouthful!)

By coincidence I planned to visit St Cross this morning so we met for coffee in Hundred Men's Hall.

John had read 'The Book' in two days flat and said he had some 'questions' which sounded a bit ominous but it was more like points for discussion. He first asked about my sister, mentioned in my dad's biography, and I found that very touching.

After a chat and coffee I said I was going to take my camera round the Master's garden. 'I'm coming with you,' said John.

So, never one to miss an opportunity, here is my photo of him in a corner of the garden with 'The Book'.

He was showing his copy to various folk as we walked around and has promised to lend it to more than one person.

After we parted I went into the Norman church. Someone was playing the organ and I admit to having a small 'overcome' but peaceful moment before I went back to my car and home for lunch.

Brother John is no.105 in my strangers' project:
