At the swimming pool, on the book-swap table, I picked up a book by Alexander McCall Smith, one in his No.1 Ladies Detective Agency Series which reminded me of this shot I took on holiday.
Emeritus Professor of Medical Law at Edinburgh University, he now devotes his time to writing novels which have been translated into 45 languages.
I do not attempt to describe his work; many will already know it.
We once attended a lecture he gave: a genial and humorous man, besides obviously having a sharp intellect, and the talk was made more entertaining by his habit of telling a joke or a funny story and then laughing loudly himself before the audience had a chance to react.
