Doing a few bits of shopping in a local small market town this morning, I saw this lady selling the Big Issue on a street corner. She was well wrapped up against the cold, as were all the market traders nearby.
I crossed over the road and asked for a portrait, explaining I would post it online, to which request she readily agreed and I discovered her name is Canada.
From her slight accent I wondered if this name came from her family's culture but she said that was not the case but surmised maybe her mum had a good holiday once in the country of that name.
I showed Canada the photo on the camera screen and offered to send it to her via email but she told me that nobody in her family has an email address.
She also told me that particular corner is a regular place for her to sell the Big Issue on Fridays and Saturdays so I have in mind to print a copy and take it to her.
Instead of buying the Big Issue, I made a donation.
Canada was as gracious as she was beautiful as Mother Christmas.
Bep, I confess no! It was cold and Ray was standing across the road carrying several parcels and waiting for me! If I do manage to see her again, I will.
The Big Issue is a good read but I expect your donation was more than her commission on the sale would be. You have captured a sadness or a tiredness in her eyes.. maybe both. A fav for another good portrait and another one for making a donation.
i have heard of a lot of different names but i have never heard of the name of Canada for a person.
i live in Canada. glad someone had a great visit here. lovely protrait.
Your comment about capturing a sadness or tiredness in Canada's eyes made me stop and think because I have looked at this portrait more than once and felt something there which I could not voice.
Phil, thanks. I plan to print the portrait today and pay a return visit to see Canada on Friday - and to buy a sprout tree from the wonderful fruit and veg merchant in that market town.
p.s. I did print a copy of this photo and Ray and I went back and found Canada today on the same corner. She was really pleased to have the portrait and told us she loves England and the English whom she regards as her family.
She speaks good English but did not speak a word when she came here from Romania 5 years ago.
@quietpurplehaze That's brilliant. I'm really glad she liked it. I have a Romanian nurse when I had my new hip and she was fabulous. Her sense of humour was second to none and she too loved being here and English people.

Not that it is very important, I was just wondering
It's OK. I did think of it but sometimes some questions don't seem somehow appropriate at the time....
I am sure Canada will appreciate a hard copy photo :)

Haven't read it but I do know of it.
