The National Trust guide on duty in this room told us that this being a Georgian House, the cutlery is laid to reflect the fashion of the era: guests would be wearing sleeves with ruffles which would have caught on the knives, forks etc if they had been laid in the usual way.

That's really interesting because as soon as I saw the photo I spotted particularly the knives. I can see their logic.
