Oh Hazel, I had some hydrangea's in vases over the Xmas break (they were Mum's favourite......!) and they surely didn't last long - maybe 3 days which I believe is quite a long time when cut! They were so beautiful tho!
I think the old papery flowers are supposed to give the new buds protection which is why my husband does not like me to cut them for indoor decoration!
Yes, I think woody stems do not do well when cut. Ours (on the plant) have looked like this for a long time now!
