By coincidence, I finished my 'book for writing' at the end of 2018 so I decided to make my new one for 2019 my 'Portrait of Me' for 'beginnings'.
I write at a regular time, every night before we put out the light. It's part of my self-management plan for coping with the stalking beast (as described by another sufferer) aka bipolar disorder.
I write about anything from the day, anything which is on my mind, anything.........
My book is not a diary, rather just any book with lined pages and a cover that I fancy.
I always write with a pencil; the new book has a beautiful feel to the lined pages.
It may sound a small step but my self-management plan is made up of small steps which keep me well.
The books do not stack up over the years. The important part is the writing. When they are full, they find their way to the bin.
posted for 'beginnings', the first of '52 Portraits of Me'.
hi Hazel, I'm surprised that you don't keep the books! That's very interesting to me. However, welcome to the Portraits of Me challenge - I look forward to seeing yours every week :)
What a brilliant idea! I think that idea would also be good if you can’t sleep and have lots on your mind, just write it down! Enjoy your new photo project
I used to write a lot and it does help you unravel the stuff that builds up in your mind. Helps you understand yourself. I haven’t put pen to paper in a while but I like the idea of writing something everyday and started to before Christmas... but I had forgotten over the holidays, you have just reminded me. I hope your positive steps help you through and that 2019 is a great one for you.
Nice to see you join in Hazel. Great minds... I also posted my hand ;)
That is so interesting to me how you write the thoughts but have no desire to keep the books. I guess it's like you are letting go of those thoughts and so there's no need to keep them, is that right?
Beautiful shot that tells a story and a great thing to do. I used to write in a journal but became lax with it. I have journals that my dad used to write.
That's such a good idea, Hazel. There's nothing I love more than a new notebook - the blank pages just waiting to be filled! My Granddaughters chose me a new one for Christmas
At first I was surprised you didn’t keep the words you write but the more I thought about it I began to understand. As it’s not a diary so you can write exactly what comes into your head but haven’t got the fear that one day someone will read your writings & discuss private personal thoughts that you write down. Makes complete sense. I wrote a bit of a diary the first years I got married & cringe when I read them back now. I think I will burn them one day but haven’t done so yet. A new book is exciting to write in. I think you have something if your father in you re the writing.
Hummmm! I wonder if I tried that I could finish it. Love your thought process I have tried several times to keep a diary but to no avail. Maybe your way would work. I know I couldn’t finish that 52 portraits challenge not as gun shy as I am about being in front of the camera.
Great composition and focussing. I loved reading about your book and your thoughts Hazel. I love a book for different reasons. It stays on my coffee table and is used for anything from a daily chore such as lists or details of what I am cooking for friends or researching anything etc. Pretty covers are always a draw.
What a good idea and even better if it works for you, You could summarise each one into a 6 word story, shoot an image to go with it and enter it into the sixws- challenge. There's often one running.
Yes, most people are surprised at that! Your 'beginnings' portrait inspired me to have a go!

Pat, thank you for all that you wrote which is much appreciated.
Sounds a great idea. I always look for nice covers and sometimes make my own with photos or material
Thanks for the idea David, but if I am awake in the small hours, I am usually eating a bowl of cereal! Guess that could also make a sws!
