Christmas mincemeat

1 medium cooking apple, peeled, cored, chopped small * 4oz brown sugar * 8oz veg suet
8oz sultanas * 8oz raisins * 8oz currants * 4oz mixed peel
zest & juice of 1 lemon * 3 tablespoons sherry or brandy

Put all into a large bowl, mix well, cover with clingfilm, leave to stand a few days, stirring each day, pot into jars.

I usually give most jars away visiting friends before Christmas but this year we will eat it all ourselves.....

Beautiful hand made label too. Lovely!

@pcoulson

Peter, thank you. I usually make crumbles or pies with mincemeat and stewed apple filling rather than mince pies......

Very cool, always wondered what goes into making it!

That would be a lovely gift to receive. I love mince tarts but no one else in my family seems to so I stopped doing homemade several years ago. I usually go to a local bakery and buy half a dozen tarts and eat them all myself over Christmas week. (Insert embarrassed emoji here.)What is vegetarian suet?

@gardencat

It's the vegetarian equivalent of beef suet. Google Atora vegetarian suet to know more.

Great homemade delicacies. Everyone in my family has a special dishes Christmas special. After making them, we exchanged each other, so everyone had a lot of different products. This year it will probably be monothematic.

I'm pleased to know some 365 friends might try this recipe. I have made it several years now and have been trying, without success, to remember who gave it to me. These quantities make about 5 jars and you might notice that I use Bonne Maman jam jars if I have them. My fav way of using the mincemeat is to cook one or two Bramley apples and make a mincemeat and apple tart.

I yearn for a mince pie! But suet is not available here and dried fruit costs a small fortune. Bon appetite
