I've felt inspired by @onewing, thanks Babs, to do a month of mono in May. It's something I'm pretty unskilled in so any constructive comments/tips will be very welcome.
We took a trip around the harbour in Bristol. I really liked these houses in all different colours but the shot was overexposed and not very successful. So I've converted to sepia - shame to lose the colour but I quite like the effect.
The angle/viewpoint is good. Maybe a bit more contrast and for me, slightly less rich brown. The wall with steps up seems to merge, rather indistinct, and the foliage a bit 'muddy'. A little more contrast might help - but don't oversharpen! Can't remember what editing program you use but worth making a copy of this and playing around with the tools it offers. See what happens! Look forward to the series.
Yes I thought it needed more contrast but was not sure what to do. The colour was on Picasa. Have just sepia'ed another shot on PicMonkey which I think is a better colour. I also have FastStone, the most sophisticated prog I have but still learning how to use it - hope somebody in my photo group will help me. I think it will be better to shoot in b/w (Fuji X20 has a few choices) or sepia? Please don't hesitate to critique because I want to learn from doing this (and shall not take offence!) Thanks.
Thanks, Julie - the framing was a bit tricky as there was a large bit of metal from the boat we were on right across bottom left corner of my original shot and it was hard to get rid of without losing the general scene.
Wow, I can't believe that I have inspired somebody. Thanks for the compliment. This is a beautiful way to start your theme. Excellent choice for sepia. It really gives it that old picture postcard feel. Fantastic. definitely a fav for me.
Babs, thanks for your enthusiasm - yes you did inspire me because although I still love 365, being in year 3, I sometimes need a challenge and mono has never been my favourite or forte so thanks again - and for the fav!
A lovely rich sepia tone gives this image an old worlde feeling -- perhaps a little more contrast so to make the houses look cleaner ( hope this makes sense !!) Great pov and capture !
I vow every other day to do a b/w one but they never seem to lend themselves to that style. I always think buildings do better in black & white but must admit I love colour better! This one looks god in sepia.
Gorgeous point of view of an interesting scene. If you have a program that can handle B&W conversion, try shooting in color, making all your exposure and contrast corrections, and only then converting to B&W.
Ivan, thanks - any tips?

Kane, thank you - so kind - but I've done v little b/w or mono.
Thanks - bookmarked to read later!

Ivan, I read half of it!!!!!!
That's what I thought!!!!! I've just set my X20 (faithful friend) to sepia.....
That's 3 of us who agree a little more contrast is needed! Thanks for your comment.
Consider converting from an original colour image to sepia, too.
This shot was that conversion - but going to see what the camera gives me on sepia next. Thanks for ref - must stop meeting like this! Hello to Tina!
Ooo, can cheat and redo old ones of my grandparents!!!!!!!!
nice large.
Thanks, Ross, that's nice and clear and helpful. I've done exactly that on the sepia I've posted today: http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/add-ins/2014-05-02
