I'm pretty sure it's a mexican shell flower (Tigridia pavonia). Maybe all those boring taxonomy classes were not a waste of time after all. Its gorgeous btw.
Well thank you. Put the name in + image on Google and it certainly is! Our neighbour said it was tri+'something' because of having 3 different sorts of petals and 3 of each sort. I'll tell him.
