Darn it!

January word prompt - recollections

Did any of you learn how to darn your socks when you were young? This is the same darning "egg" my mother used and I used when she taught me. I still darn socks to this day.
Super shot and title. I've never darned (is that a word?) in my life.

Mum taught me to knit and sew...and I’m so pleased she did. Darning is very therapeutic...once you get the hang of it. Like all skills...the more you do, the more effective you become and the easier it is. Am able to use them on regular basis as a member of our local Repair Café.

You evoked memories. My grandmother had such the darning "egg" and she taught me too.

My mum had a darning mushroom - same principal - I haven't seen one of those for over 60 years !

If I wore socks yes I would know how to darn them, I too learnt how to darn when makedo and mend was the watch word a true 50s child! Although our darning ‘mushroom’ was not as colourful and it’s nice to see you still have yours, super blast from the past.

I never learned to knit or crochet, so no darning in my history but I can say I have probably put 100s of patches on blue jeans! Love your little darning tool- especially the history behind it.

I remember my mother's darning egg -- she died 35 years ago today. Thanks for bringing back another memory.

We don`t . You can buy one cheeper than wash them in the laundry.
Long time ago I did it too myself. Great nice memory shot.

@kwind Darned is the word, Kim. Thank you.
@mzzhope I don't know why my mother thought it was important to darn my knee socks. You really didn't miss out on much. Today it allows me to wear my handknit socks a bit longer, should they develop a hole. thanks Hope.
@tosee Thank you very much Tom.
@s4sayer Ah Margo. I believe to some extent we a kindred spirits. Thank you.
@haskar Ah, how wonderful, Haskar. So glad it evoked good memories.
@vignouse They're hard to find. And most new ones are more egg shaped. Thank you Richard.
@jb030958 Thank you Jennie.
@craftymeg Thanks Margaret. Hope those memories are good ones.
@olivetreeann Thank you Ann. Yes, I've done both sewn on and ironed on patches in my time, too.
@tunia You're so welcome Tunia. Glad they are good memories.
@pyrrhula I agree about the price, although I darn my handknit socks when I get a hole in one. Hope the memories are good ones.
