Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments on this photo of a grackle. I think that birds regulate their heat by breathing through their mouth or opening it anyway. As it was a relative warm day, that is probably why its mouth is open. I, too, am not a fan of grackles. This little group went through my suet pretty quickly and hung around not allowing other birds access.

Grackles are real pests, aren't they? I don't usually see them in my woods so I'm thankful for that. He is definitely claiming that feeder for his own.

@vignouse Apparently grackles are members of the crow family. @olivetreeann Yes, they are pests. I think I may have to quit suet for awhile. I like to have it because it brings in the woodpeckers and the nuthatches.
