Nice!
I've been debating taking a pic of the protesters who stand outside the Benton County Courthouse every day from 5PM to 6PM, holding anti-war signs, etc. I'm so chicken to do it, though! Should I talk to them first? Should I go across the street and try to do it covertly? What is the etiquette? (and, am I really over thinking this?!) How did you go about it?
@2thgirl Oh - DO IT - I think they'd be happy to be photographed. I don't want to ask people because that changes the whole dynamic - then it's a portrait as opposed to a candid - fine if that's what you're after, but different from a candid. I think about this subject a lot - in my few foreign travels, I've been hyper aware that in most countries people don't want their picture taken without giving permission and in some, it's considered extremely rude (as when I was in Morocco and wanted to take pics of women - it just wasn't done). You could search the discussions here on candids if you haven't. They are interesting and some offer great tips. The gen'l attitude seems to be that we, the photographers, have some kind of right to just take people's pics; I'm torn - and feel there truly are ethical (not sure that's quite the right concept) issues involved and don't want to intrude on people. I'm bad a photographing people to start with and having all these qualms about candids, my project probably won't have much of this. But, who knows - this project has been full of surprises to me about who I am and what I'll do . . . LOL.
@reba I was thinking the same thing about asking permission, and then if that would change the mood of the picture. I DO love candids much more than posed pictures. I'll check out the boards for this topic; didn't think about that! Thanks! I've learned some fun and interesting things as well since starting this, and have gotten a little bit out of my comfort zone a few times in trying to get the right shot. Maybe this will be my next hurdle to get over!
@2thgirl I've saved this online book about street photography from one of the 365 board discussions. It looked well done and interesting, but I haven't made time to read it. Maybe it will offer some help: http://book.85mm.ch/GoingCandid.pdf
