Known for their long necks and legs, giraffes roam the grasslands of Africa in small herds, eating the leaves of acacia trees. Acacias are a thorny shrub-with dense wood. Noah reportedly built the Ark of acacia wood. All I know is I spent considerable time ducking and dodging those thorns as our jeep driver plowed through the underbrush in search of the graceful giraffes and other wild creatures. My list of animals sighted has grown to almost 50-including four of the Big 5 so far -- (lions, elephants, hippos, water buffalo and leopards!) They say no Africa trip is complete without seeing all 5. Will be posting more as time allows.
@redy4et See, we have coordinated our schedules again! ;-)) Hope you get to see at least one leopard, and many, many more animals in the wild! When we were in Belize I had my heart set on seeing a jaguar, especially the day we were hiking in the Jaguar Preserve on my birthday, but it just did not happen! I am sure they were watching us, though...
Elizabeth, I am so glad to see you posted photos you took in South Africa! You know down here there are so many opportunities for photography and you must consider coming over again sometime and then visit Namibia as well. To take good wildlife photos are extremely difficult and I think you did very well.
@bernard Thank you so much! I was fortunate to visit South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe on this trip! Can't wait to come back again. It was a thrill to experience the animals in their natural habitat and yes, getting good photos was a challenge because 1. I've never done this before, 2. The animals move quickly and 3. I was stuck in a jeep so not much chance to set up a shot. Just shoot and hope for the best.
