Statue of Freedom by redy4et

Statue of Freedom

On the very top of the U. S. Capitol Building stands a 19-foot-high bronze female figure called the Statue of Freedom. It weighs 15,000 pounds and had to be hoisted up in sections and assembled atop the dome in 1863. I read that in 1993, it was brought down off its pedestal by helicopter for restoration. There are some great pictures of it on the Internet. For a closer look at the details, a plaster model of the statue is on display in the Capitol Visitor Center.
Incredible picture.

I'm amazed that the ladies had such a presence in those days! They didn't even have the vote then!
