This is one of the sights I see when sailing in the outer harbor. This huge oil platform is one of four located a couple miles off the Southern California coast. Offshore oil production is controversial but provides a significant portion of the state's petroleum and natural gas. The rigs all have women's names starting with the letter E. No idea what that's about.
