Painted Lady  by rhoing

Painted Lady

I was hopeful this would be a “new” butterfly: a species I have not photographed to date … and it is!

Confirmed at BAMONA as Vanessa cardui or “Painted Lady”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/724528

I can’t help but think this looks like a snail with the relative lengths of the antennae and the way the head sticks out just a little from this perspective.

Processing. Rotated 90° CW (its head was actually pointed toward the ground when the image was taken), cropped and name added.

@dinelson Thank you, Diana!
@jtookey150 Thanks, Jean. That's the lens zoomed out to 250mm!
@michelleyoung And so many different kinds of butterflies and moths! Who knew!??!
@suek Aww, thanks for a fav, Sue!
@ladyjane Thanks so much, Jane! It was one of those surprises that you don't think is going to be noteworthy until you see it on-screen!
@cjwhite Thanks, Carolyn! You're definitely part of my motivation on butterflies! I find many of your shots through the scientific name tags! ;)
@digitalrn Thanks, Rick! Yeah, I seem to have jumped over from flowers to "Things that fly"!

What pretty wings! I so get these confused with Red Admirals! I used to think they were ALL Painted Lady, as we raise those in the classroom, but now I think they are all Red Admirals...shoot! Very nice angle on this one!

@xtech Thanks, Elaine! I got lucky that day. It was a low-frame-count day and it was almost this or nothing!

@espyetta I won't tell! (And I need BAMONA's help identifying!)

@cjwhite I'm sorry to ask, Carolyn, but I haven't a clue where you mentioned this before: what is your resource for making identifications?

@rhoing I use a book called Field Guide to Insects and Spiders of North America by the National Wildlife Federation. I also use the site Bugguide .net.

@cjwhite Thank you, Carolyn! I have a birthday next month and I have added it to my amazon wish list where at least one of my daughters can see it. :)
