One of the fun parts of working at a university for Clare & me is meeting the parents of our favorite students. A definite down side, however, is saying good-bye to these young people as they leave for their next adventures.
Today, Clare & I bid adieu to Missy, whom we’ve known for the last 3½ years. Not an economics student and not a student in Clare’s college, but a Ph.D. student in an entirely different discipline, we met Missy through rowing! As a first-year Ph.D. student sitting on adjacent indoor rowers 3+ years ago, Missy asked if I were the faculty advisor for the school’s rowing club. (She had been a 4-year varsity rower at her undergraduate school.) Thanks for asking, missy! It has been a privilege to get to know you and row with you!
Missy is moving to Salt Lake City for a one-year internship and her mom is in town to help her pack up, move out and begin the 23-hour drive to SLC. Yesterday missy & I had our last row together on Cedar Lake — but just for a while! — and today Clare & I cooked for mother-and-daughter at our house.
We wish her well, but we know Missy will make the most of her time in SLC, even though it will be yet another year apart from her boyfriend, Brian. I’m sorry about that, but there is a piece of good news, missy: there’s a community rowing club at the Great Salt Lake, http://www.gslr.org/ !
Maybe it’s just a nice bike ride from your apartment? If not, it’s a straight shot west of the city on I-80.

What a nice story! And a great photo of a fine young woman and her mom. Glad you could get in one last row and have a special dinner before she leaves.
