Eastern cicada killer wasp

An earlier post of an Eastern cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus) — http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2012-07-04 — was an in-your-face, comical kind of shot. This one will serve identification purposes.

I want to learn what the “bugs” in our garden are. I “disposed of” something creepy looking that turned out to be a ladybug pupa. So now it’s “shoot; identify; dispose.” A couple days ago I photographed a bug and learned that it was a “spotted cucumber beetle.” That’s definitely a pest and while that one “got away,” the next one shan’t be so fortunate…

Confirmed at BugGuide as “Sphecius speciosus” or “Eastern Cicada Killer”; http://bugguide.net/node/view/680403

A good shot. The details are so clear especially on the wing.

Marvelous shot but I like cicadas because I thought they killed wasps and I have way too many of those around here. So they have this predator then?... Shame!

@marlboromaam Don’t kill wasps: “Cicadas are herbivores. This means they eat vegetation. Young cicadas eat liquid from plant roots, while molting cicadas eat twigs. Adult cicadas do not feed, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture.” » https://www.livescience.com/57814-cicada-facts.html
