Thank you, MaryBeth! by rhoing

Thank you, MaryBeth!

Knowing I was going to post a B&W, I was looking for “structure” and subjects that would “pop” with very shallow depth-of-field. I ended up with three shots that I liked. So thank you, MaryBeth, for encouraging me to do this B&W challenge! This is a really gorgeous, purple flower and although the color information has been discarded, I really like this image. (B&W has been a challenge, particularly in the greenhouse, but it’s definitely been good for me!)

This is Tibouchina urvilleana (family Melastomataceae); common names “Purple glory tree,” “Princess plant” or “Princess flower.” Thank you again, Rich!

Taken at the SIUC Plant Biology Greenhouse, http://www.plantbiology.siu.edu/facilities/plant-biology-facilities/greenhouse/index.php

Notes
» I used a +2 close-up filter on the 18–55mm lens.
» I was glad I went to the greenhouse early: they closed before mid-afternoon to spray insecticide!

Oooo....this is gorgeous! The stamen and the dark veins in the petals in right corner really are awesome! Nice dof too! It is like a b and w Georgia O'Keefe. Black and white is hard for me too! :0)

Very dramatic as though the flower is moving
