Widow skimmer by rhoing

Widow skimmer

I think this is a Widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa, family Libellulidae, i.e., skimmers). Perched on a “blood banana plant,” I think. I’m checking on both these IDs!

Taken in the outside garden adjacent to the greenhouse.

Confirmed at BugGuide as Libellula luctuosa or “Widow Skimmer”; http://bugguide.net/node/view/793066

Great find. You wonder where they get their names

He's a handsome fellow! And "blood banana" plant? What in the world! I was not even sure it was a plant in this pic! Very funky and cool
