So many names…

There are apparently at least two scale replicas of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (commonly referred to as “The Wall”), which has become one of the most visited memorials in Washington, D.C., with an estimated 4.5 million annual visitors. One of these mobile replicas arrived in Carbondale and was officially “opened ” yesterday — on 9/11. Here I’ve photographed the panel containing the name of a good friend’s brother (12th row from the top)…

While not as powerful as visiting the full-size Memorial in Washington, it is nevertheless a powerful and sobering experience.

Can't wait for the traveling one to come here (soon). The one in DC is incredible.

@danette I went to the Memorial in DC once. Subsequently, a conference took me to DC again. I wondered if it would be as powerful the second time as the first. It was. And a third time, too. So many names. You can search for names online and people can post to the web page. Today I learned that my friend's brother was killed by friendly fire. I wonder if that is [partly] why he never speaks of his older brother. *That* would be really, *really* hard to accept…

I have never visited the memorial but to see and walk through something like this is very humbling, and it creates such a heavy heart when you realize the sacrifices they made
