New tires

The old ones weren't in terrible shape, but as Clare put it, the new tires feel like running on new sneakers. But it's also a matter of safety. Clare is making the thousand-mile round-trip drive to her mom's again this weekend. We have put a lot of miles on that vehicle this year. Excel tells me this will probably be a 20,000 mile year when the previous two were both 16,000. So this year will be a 25% increase over each of the two preceding years.

Tire labels — this is for me to have written down somewhere! —
A letter "P" at the beginning indicates that the tire type is P-Metric, referring to tires made to certain standards within the United States, intended for passenger vehicles.
» The first number is the tire or section width, in millimeters, from sidewall-to-sidewall.
» The first number after the slash gives the height of the sidewall as a ratio of the width.
» "R" indicates a radial tire.
» The last number gives the size of the wheel, in inches, that the tire is intended to fit.

So the tires for Clare's Escape, P235/70R16, have sections that are 235mm (9¼") wide, sidewalls that are 70% of the width (165mm or 6½"), and go on 16" diameter wheels.
