17th Street Barbecue by rhoing

17th Street Barbecue

In the neighboring town of Murphysboro, we have a nationally-known little “restaurant” (though “bar and grill” may be more apt). President Clinton fed his fondness for "barbecue" here when he visited southern Illinois during his presidency. There are lots of other photographs of celebrities who have come here to sample the fare as well. Amy Mills is one of the owners and she was one of the judges when the cooking reality show "Chopped" had a barbecue theme.

The last time Steve & Jenny were here, we brought Steve here for his first tasting of mid-western barbecue. It was high on his list of things to do during this Christmas visit, so today we returned! (We gave him a 17th Street t-shirt for Christmas!)

It was a busy day of returning the rental vehicle to the regional airport in Marion, then taking Neal & Grace to the light-rail station where they boarded a train to the airport in St. Louis for their return to Boston. After dropping off the kids, Clare & I went back to Mass at St. Andrew's in Murphysboro, then met Steve & Jenny at 17th Street.

Today I did something I'd never done before. Father Gary came in with a fellow priest to eat at 17th Street and Clare & I paid their bill, too. We have to take care of our priests-and-pastors!

After dinner here, we had to pack for the early travel day tomorrow. Heading up to Clare's mom's in Fremont, OH.

Oh, yeah. This [more or less] completes 5 years on 365. First post,

There have been several "misses," most of them recently, but for the most part and/or for-better-or-for-worse, I've posted something for every day for five years now. I'd like to think that I'm still improving in terms of composition and technique, even if the quality of the subject matter has declined significantly of late…

Congratulations on the completion of your 5th year. President Clinton AF1 plane stopped something like 8 times in Albuquerque while he was president, more visits than any other president before or since. Some said he had a penchant for enchiladas (others said he might know someone special here).
