The evolution of storage

In our attic. Part of the reason I've had such lame posts lately is I have been busy up here. I have built 16' of 2'-wide shelving in the hope that this will make our use of this space more efficient and maybe even increase the capacity, so as to allow an upward migration of some things we don't need very often from the garage below (where three rowing shells occupy most of one wall). Simple 2×4 supports using the pre-existing trusses and ½" plywood. Plus I get to use power tools, "Ar! Ar! Ar!"

This space had become an un-navigable mess. Like many things, it happened gradually, over 17 years, during which time two adolescent daughters grew up and moved out on their own.

For now, I want to complete a similar run of 16' on the other side of the "aisle" that runs under the roof ridge.

Not only are we trying to organize everything more efficiently, we're going through everything, too, and jettisoning things we no longer need or want. We're inspired by Clare's mom who downsized her household when she moved a year ago, as well as a kiln-fired plaque that used to hang in her living room —
“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” — William Morris (1834–1896, 19th century English writer, designer, pioneering socialist, and environmental activist) » http://www.morrissociety.org/

Oh, today is the 41st anniversary of our first date for Clare & me…
