[Since Lisa asked.] The kit lens that came with my Canon 5+ years ago (on the right) died and it was not worth repairing: $100 to repair; the identical lens might cost $120ish and the updated version (IS II) is about $200. As an early birthday present from Clare, I ordered the lens on the left, Canon's EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.
A comparison of the lens on the left and the IS II version of the lens on the right—
» Focal length & maximum aperture: 17–55mm 1:2.8 vs. 18–55mm f/3.5-5.6
» Lens construction: 19 elements in 12 groups vs. 11 elements in 9 groups
» Max. diameter x length, weight: 3.3" × 4.4" (83.5mm × 110.6mm), 22.8 oz. (645g) vs. 2.7" × 3.33" (68.5mm × 84.5mm), 7.1 oz. (200g)
» Closest focusing distance: 1.15 ft./0.35m vs. 9.8 in./0.25m

I have that very same lens that came with my original camera (the lens on the right). To be honest it's not a lens I really use now as I have a dedicated macro, a wide angle,a zoom, a 50mm and an 85mm...of course that's not to say that I won't treat myself to another at some stage ;) I hope you enjoy using your new lensxx
