Today we went outside Grand Canyon National Park and hiked into a “cinder cone” in the Red Mountain Geological Area of the Coconino National Forest. From a sign on the trail »
“The Red Mountain Geological Area was created to preserve a unique cinder cone within the San Francisco Peaks Volcanic Field. The large natural amphitheater cut into the cone's northeast flank offers a unique experience for visitors to stand in the center … of the crater surrounded by erosional pillars or Hoodoos.”
The nearly-vertical back walls of the amphitheater rise 800 feet. The amphitheater was created by an eruption about a million years ago but continues to be enlarged by erosion today.
