As of November, 2016, Illinois is the only state without a budget for the current fiscal year. Today our newly-elected state senator held a town hall meeting with another recently-elected state senator who represents a part of our county. The questions they answered were mostly about the lack of a state budget for going-on-two-years. It's had a disastrous effect on social service programs and higher education, which is the concern in this university town. Apparently the morale on campus is quite bad and the university continues to lose its most marketable faculty while additional budget cuts are imposed. Indeed, one of the people at today's town hall meeting went public that she's leaving for a state university out east. She's an internationally-recognized scholar, so it's yet another blow because the Democrats and Republicans generally, and the Speaker of the House and the Governor in particular, can't compromise and pass a budget.
