Is it a “rule” that appliances break on weekends? I was in the midst of boat repair last Saturday when Clare reported that the washing machine wasn't working. It filled with water, but then nothing. As our younger daughter says, "To the Google!"
Google searches suggested that the seemingly-likeliest cause was a bad lid switch (the component that makes the clicking sound when you close the lid). This is our washer's lid switch under the control panel (the white and gray part, with the grounding wire).
Since this is an after-the-fact filler, we know how the story ends. I found lid switches online, and Monday morning I found a local appliance store had one for twice the price ($32.66), but I could have it immediately. Time is money, so I bought the more expensive part locally and had the washer working by noon … which was probably sooner than we could have had a technician come and diagnose the problem and charge for a service call. :)
