More on the name, but first, being bold again, I have submitted this to BugGuide, not for an ID, but directly to the section for Eurytides marcellus, or Zebra Swallowtail: there is no other species this could be, given my location.
I have only known this species by one scientific name, Eurytides marcellus, since my first post of this butterfly. Today (01.13.2023) I confirmed my link to the species page at Butterflies and Moths of North America and find that they now name this species as Neographium marcellus. A Google search then turned up this “Featured Creatures” page at the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida. Protographium marcellus is now the seventh scientific name for this species.
While this species is not found in the UK, I searched the UK listing for “Zebra” and found a hilarious listing for “Zebra,” Colobura dirce. Do read the two sentences under “Introduction” (“clearly an accidental introduction”) and see the photo of the underside of the male’s wings.
