The Wilderness Railway runs from Queenstown to Strahan (W. Tasmania) It was constructed approx 100 years ago to carry copper over the mountain range to the coastal port. It goes up and down inclines not normally associated with trains. It uses a third rail and cog wheels under the engine to help pull itself up ( and slow itself down!!) on the very steep sections.
@casablanca Hi Casablanca - thanks for the comment and fav! It's looking more and more like you need to visit Tassie - boats and trains! And this was a very cute steam train too - quite small! :)
@peadar Hi Peter - thanks so much for your comment, fav and follow! You are so right - it was called a rack and pinion railway - it was the first in Australia - it goes up a 1 in 14 slope at one stage. Fascinating to see and learn about. Cheers

@peadar Check this out, fellow train fanatic!
Rob, perfect shot. I think you're describing a rack and pinion railway, often used to get trains up and down steep hills. Nice.
