Before the flowers...

All gum trees have a bud with a cap - as shown here. The cap falls off when the flower opens. The caps can be many different shapes and sizes - and are used to help identify species.

@fr1da Hi Frida - thanks for your comment. It was originally in colour (the b&w was for a challenge) and I think it was better in colour. It had lovely brown tones.
