I.R. scene from the road

My get-pushed partner asked me to have a go at converting an image to I.R. I had U Tube video as a guide but unfortunately it was using LightRoom and had access to a lot of tools that my program lacks. Hence this is not very good but is about as close as I could get... I actually think an IR camera would be pretty neat to own! :)
A very cool shot - so other-worldly with the rolling hills and trees.
I also like the IR effect and would love to play with a proper camera!

I love the IR effect, very impressive. My eyes are drawn right into the photo
July 23rd, 2019
Well done
July 23rd, 2019
I think it is really good. I am still trying to get one that looks realistically IR to me.
July 23rd, 2019
Beautiful effect!
July 23rd, 2019
that's a great effect!
July 23rd, 2019
Very cool effect
July 23rd, 2019
I thought this was one of Fbailey's at first! Brilliant - well done.
July 23rd, 2019
Great image Rob, impressive.
July 24th, 2019
It's wonderful in its surreal-ness!
July 24th, 2019
Surreal for sure and it keeps drawing me back to look some more

I had to google what IR was! I like this, almost has an old school negative quality about it.
July 24th, 2019
Well I think you've done a terrific job here! Love all the lines leading into the distance. Seriously my little cheap Ebay secondhand camera restored my flagging phojo so much - do take a look there sometime, you can pick them up pretty reasonably.
July 24th, 2019
@fbailey Hi FB - I was seriously hoping you would not notice this - it's so very ordinary compared to your real things. And it's quite a procedure to do too!. I've never bought a second hand camera -or any camera now that I think of it :) But I'll have a look and see what's there - it would be a great new interest! Many thanks Rob
July 24th, 2019
@robz All of my cameras (D40 x 2, D3200 (now defunct after dropping in river), D5100, D50 (IR camera) and Zorki (film) all are Ebay bargains. Not had any problem with any of them. Had several lenses from there too and they've been fine (came from the Ukraine). Hope you find one, I've certainly never regretted the purchase. Good luck!
July 24th, 2019
@fbailey Thanks FB. I'll start having a look and do some research to get an idea of what might work. And then set up a search on EBay. Hopefully I'll eventually have an idea of what I'm looking for.
:) However, would it be too rude to ask if you would mind having a quick look at the EBay post if I find one that looks OK to me? Just to see if the specs are what is needed? I'll understand perfectly if you would rather not!!!!! Cheers Rob

@robz I hope you don't think I'm cheeky but I already looked for you on the place where I bought mine! Postage is quite dear from the UK though. The D50 came all set up and ready to go for IR (preset WB, just use AP and f8 for most shots) and had battery, charger and card with it but no lens. The link just for info is: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikon-D70-infrared-converted-Camera-690nm-standard-Infrared-Converted-Camera-IR/264332812965?hash=item3d8b76a2a5:g:QYwAAOSwRLZT~xux
Happy to look at any you like the look of!
Always look for a seller with 100% feedback btw.
July 24th, 2019
@fbailey Thanks so much FB - I had a look at this and have a better idea of what is involved. I have never used one of these types of camera so it will be a big learning curve eg you mentioned AP - I Googled it but am still no wiser - LOL Also I didn't realize that you would buy the lens separately - is there a generic type and roughly about how much do you think that would cost?
At least this has given me a starting point - thank you so much! I might see if there's anything on the Aust. Ebay - the postage etc would be a lot less. Thanks again Cheers Rob
July 25th, 2019
Yes -Like this negative effect !
July 25th, 2019
@fbailey Hi again FB. I had a look to see if there was much for sale on the Aust EBay. Nothing like the site you found and the only ones which were being offered came from a buyer with an approval rating of only 97% - and didn't tell you the shutter count.
So, I tried to buy the one you suggested - but at the moment the site is telling me they won't post to Australia. I've emailed the seller to see what else he can do to get it sent over - apparently the problem is in posting the battery. I'll keep you posted and start to try to learn something about lens :) Cheers Rob
July 27th, 2019
@robz Good luck Rob - you do realise if it's a body only camera you'll need to get a lens with it? Do hope you get an IR camera though, it really perked my enthusiasm up. Keep me posted pse!
July 27th, 2019
Just noticed you've already added the bit re lens!
July 27th, 2019
@fbailey Lol - I was thinking of suggesting the lens to my kids as a birthday present! Not that I have any idea what to tell them to buy. What would you ask for to use as an everyday lens - if there is such a thing? Also, could this type of camera take IR macros or use a telephoto lens. Funny questions to ask when I don't even have the camera yet!! Just being optimistic. Thanks again. :)
July 27th, 2019
@robz The standard kit lens AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G works well. I've used this lens with screw on close up filters from the camera shop (1x, 2x, 4x & 10x all of which came to about £30 I think). If you want telephoto shots you will need a telephoto lens but, on the plus side, if you do venture down this route, all you need then is a second hand non converted Nikon camera and you're good to go for anything at all:) I looked on Ebay and you can get D70 batteries separately and on Amazon if that helps. Perhaps ask the IR chap to give you a discount? Must just add think you'll be so pleased with the results of the standard kit lens you won't both with the macro or telephoto.
July 27th, 2019
@fbailey Oh, this is all so helpful FB - you are wonderful. Everything that you have outlined here seems to so sensible and do-able that I think you have just solved all of the problems I thought I had!! And what great possibilities for the future. I'll have a look on Amazon and then get back to the EBay man and see what he says. Thanks so much! Cheers Rob
July 27th, 2019
@robz Am so pleased to have found a convert to IR! My little camera was cheaper than the D5100 but I would hate to be without it now. I use PSE to post process as I think you know but I think you use something else? There are loads of tutorials on YouTube re taking and editing IR shots (Gavin Hoey for instance) but would be happy to send you detailed list of steps I use to see if you could adapt them. I'm really quite excited for you:)
July 27th, 2019
@fbailey LOl - I'm pretty excited too! I noticed that the EBay seller had double sets of images up on his ad - before and after processing.Looking at them I think I had a bit of an idea what he had done but a list of your steps would be so helpful. I'm still using the old Microsoft Digital Editions program because I eventually figured out that it does most (not all) of the stuff that the newer programs do and it's a lot more intuitive and easily controlled. So in most cases I can follow through a series of steps and replicate them. I'll let you know what happens with the EBay man. Fingers crossed.... Cheers Rob

@robz Will watch this space!!
July 27th, 2019
Great shot and edit. I always thought these days the IR effect was done in the post editing
July 31st, 2019
@fbailey Yaahoo FB - it's sorted and it's on it's way. It probably won't arrive for a couple of weeks so that gives me time to buy a lens. It's going to be the start of a new learning curve - so exciting..... Thanks for ll your help. Cheers Rob
July 31st, 2019
@brigette Hi Brigette - thanks for having a look at this. It was edited (badly) to look like this - I only have an old program which normally does what I want - but not for this. So I've just bought (with FB's help) a converted IR camera - can't wait to have a play with it. Cheers Rob
July 31st, 2019
@robz So very pleased for you!! Great news. Did I ever give you the link for making faux IR images - gives useful info re channel mixers?
July 31st, 2019
Just seen your previous post, don't know how I missed it. Think a standard kit lens for a Nikon is £150ish but you can get them 2nd hand. Ebay again! I got mine with the D5100 for less than the price of a new lens I believe. AP stands for Aperture Priority - just keep the camera in that mode and it chooses the aperture for you. Hope this helps
July 31st, 2019
@fbailey Was that a video using Lightroom? I have that and tried to modify it to make this - it was useful but fairly technical in a way which I couldn't copy. What you have mentioned sounds more specific and would probably be more accessible so that would be great it it's not a bother. Cheers Rob
July 31st, 2019
@robz No, I don't have Lightroom. It should be with you in a few mins:)

https://medialoot.com/blog/how-to-make-a-fake-color-infrared-effect-in-photoshop/
Link as promised:) I think I adapted his method for most of my shots with the camera but here are the steps I use anyway:
1. Always use RAW
2. Adjust image from red to pink.
3. Copy layer
4. Go to Channel Mixer - Red output channel needs to show Red as 0 and Blue as 100. Blue channel needs to be Red 100 and Blue 0. Sky in pic should go blue with snow effect.
5. Go back to layers and add new Hue/Saturation layer. If you want b&w image pull sliders all the way to lhs.
6. Go to Filter, Blur, choose Gaussian Blur on Layer 1 and make this approx 25 px. Change Blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light.
7. I then use Viveza plug in (Nik filters) and play with Brightness etc or add Silver Efex or even both.
Now you know everything I know but if you need help please just let me know:)

@fbailey Wow FB - this is so detailed - and I got to step 1 and don't know how to do it LOL My little camera only does jpeg images (I think!) so I guess this will be something I'll have to figure out before starting with the new camera. And then follow your steps - it's going to be interesting!! All of this will be most helpful - and I'll have a look at the link to get started. You have been so kind - I really do appreciate it and I'm so looking forward to having a go at it all. Cheers again Rob
July 31st, 2019
@robz Might look a bit daunting at first but once you've done it a couple of times it will be second nature. You will just love it I know!
July 31st, 2019
@fbailey :) Fingers crossed.
