Started work 1864 - still working!

These Salmon Ponds were constructed and stocked in 1864. They still supply hatchlings (10,000 a year) to stock dams through out Tasmania. The ponds are situated on the Plenty River - which was stocked with both trout and salmon. The river has been a fisherman's delight ever since - and still is. We saw several large wild trout in the river as we walked along it's edge.
Our friends just opened a fish hatchery about an hour away. They'll be raising Tilapia. This sounds a little more exotic- but then you are below the equator!

@olivetreeann What are Tilapia? Are they an eating fish? The whole process is very interesting - it should be fun to follow the progress of your friend's endeavour. :)

Yes, Tilapia is an edible fish- pretty popular here in the states for its taste and health benefits. In Israel it's also known as "Saint Peter's Fish" as it is one of the more abundant species in the Sea of Galilee which is where Peter and some of the other disciples were fishermen before they followed Jesus. I don't know if it has any other names outside of that, but you should be able to call up a picture of one if you type the name into the search bar on your internet connection.
