Monte's street toboggan dates from the 1850s, and is still one of Madeira's most famous tourist attractions. Passengers take a ride in a wicker sledge, which is pushed for two kilometres by two men who run and steer. It is said that the toboggan can achieve speeds of 30 mile per hour! The men look very dapper in their straw boaters and all white clothing, and they wear special shoes with soles made from car tyres. It's a unique experience, especially as it uses roads that are shared with cars!
