Sugar town

The first Portuguese settlers came to Madeira in the early fifteenth century, and the island began to cultivate sugarcane, which led to a profitable trade in sugar until production shifted to Brazil. The island still grows sugarcane and it is used to produce rum and molasses, although it is of course most famous for its fortified wine.
