Whitehall by rumpelstiltskin

Whitehall

Whitehall is in Cheam, Surrey, and dates from around 1500. It was possibly built as a yeoman farmer's house, but later became known as 'the Council House' because Elizabeth I held a council meeting there and signed some papers. Whitehall now has lots of interesting displays, including a replica of Nonsuch Palace, which used to be nearby. In 1670, Charles II gave the palace to one of his mistresses, Barbara Villiers, but she pulled it down in 1682 and sold the materials to pay her gambling debts. What a loss to the local area!
What a wonderful looking building, and great history.
