These words were written by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester in his last letter to Elizabeth I. He was considered to be her favourite and a possible suitor.
It is on display as part of The National Archives exhibition on the theme of love letters from the past 500 years. Other exhibits include Edward VIII's abdication letter and Anne Lister's will.
Thank you for sharing this. I wish the picture were larger, or that there was a transcription available. Are the words you are quoting on the first line?
I love the way the letter was folded.
I am a great admirer of both of your queens by name Elizabeth. :-)
A note in the exhibition mentioned that Dudley put little eyebrows over the o’s in the word poor as a reference to the Queen’s nickname for him: “Eyes.”
@rumpelstiltskin Thank you very much for the link. I shall keep it. I am not very good at reading old styles, but the transcription helps, and I can easily read the quote towards the end of the letter.
Our TV has a special feature for all of the March month, and they will show movies directed by women. One of them is Sally Potter's 'Orlando' where we see the aged Queen Elizabeth.
