The Octagon, Ely Cathedral by rumpelstiltskin

The Octagon, Ely Cathedral

For day 2 of Flash of Red - a black and white shot featuring shape.

Ely Cathedral's Octagon is considered to be a major achievement in medieval engineering. The idea was conceived in 1322 when the original Norman tower collapsed. It took 18 years to build, weighs 400 tons, and is about 23 metres wide. A few years ago, I went on a tour which involved climbing up the steps to the Octagon and going on the roof of the cathedral. I'm not sure that I've got the same head for heights now, but it was well worth it for the views!
