Woodland Trolls or tree roots? by s4sayer

Woodland Trolls or tree roots?

These are in nearby undergrowth at the Grotte, rather than on the woodland and lake paths. There are several groups like this which intrigue me. I rather like the light beyond which makes them seem even more reclusive.

If anyone knows what they are, please tell me.
If it is attached to the roots it could possibly be a burl, but i'm no expert. My fiance is an arborist and he said that is what they could be but he wasn't 100% sure without seeing them. Anyways very neat and nice shot.

They do look rather like trolls - an attractive and intriguing shot.

Have you tried getting hold of them - are they hard, soft or what? I wondered if they were fungal growths?

Well spotted. Makes me wonder if this is how some of the folktales got started.

Trolls, sure!

Whatever they are, it is a great capture. I vote for trolls incognito.

I like the idea of trolls. Tree roots are not popular with us at the moment. David is out of action now for 6 weeks because he damaged his hip taking out one of our tree roots.

OK Margo not to disappoint the mystique of the troll idea, i found out what these are called, Knees that come off the roots, most commonly associated with the cypress tree. I'm just fulfilling your want to know what these are and quite frankly after seeing them i was very interested in the matter myself. If you search Bald Cypress Tree Knees on Google images you will see similar images of you little trolls.

Lovely back lighting on these trolls (I am going with that idea as opposed to the boring scientific theory).
Great shot.
