Paimpont Abbey Tour: 1 of several, as yet undetermined
This week I'm on duty to welcome visitors (pamphlets in 6 languages) and facilitate a rewarding and interesting visit to Paimpont Abbey...an unexpected jewel in the crown in the middle of nowhere, growing in importance and popularity.
Here you can see the rose window and its light giving onto the organ and chairs beyond. I VML this mellow light which encourages us to recognise that those who designed and constructed this church (2nd construction) in 1199 had the foresight which continues to enrapt the regular congregation and visitors alike...9 centuries later. Opening the church is a solitary pleasure, to open it in such light is a delight. Long may it continue!
How amazing to have buildings still in use that are so old. That sense of history is mind boggling. Here in New Zealand we think something built in the 19th century is old! Great photo.
The long history and connection to the area must be a marvelous feeling. The quiet moments of the opening must be very special, I so enjoy early morning quiet too.
Haven't yet had 365 folk turning up here. Are leaflets with photos etc are printed in 6 languages, so our 'net' casts wide and brings us some interesting people.
@dkbarnett@joysabin History, or Patrimoine, as it's known in France is the love, respect, protection and care of deep rooted culture from generation to generation. Can only agree with such civilised and cultivated practice.

@seattlite What you see here is the second construction. The first construction began in 645 AD, the second in the C10th and the current building in 1199 AD.

Paimpont Abbey has much to offer. Paimpont is not a city, nor a large town. It's a rural commune situated in a large forest, the 2nd largest in Brittany, with a population of circa 1600 souls. Its situation, its simplicity and an undefinable 'something else' make this a memorable, peaceful and affirming experience. Come if you can.

Thank you, I like it too! It's the stark simplicity and mellow tones that do it for me.
