Little Courtyards

A beautiful Cape Dutch house on the historic Church Street in Tulbagh, South Africa.
As I got out of the car I noticed the moon neatly situated on the top right hand side of the beautiful gable. Unfortunately it does not stand out nearly as much in the photo as it did at the time I took the photo.

This T-shaped house was built in the 1790s with a beautifully proportiond Hol-Bol gable. It could be described as Rococo with a fruit motif. The pineapple motif denoted aspirations to wealth to the Dutch colonists.
The house was substantially altered over the centuries by Victorian additions. After the earthquake in 1969, all later additions were demolished to restore the original T-shaped house. The thatch roof and Hol-Bol gable were rebuilt and new casement windows made as per the 1861 photo.
i just love this building, the clean surface, the crisp smooth curves and the pineapple motif. set against the blue of that sky and the green trees as accents, no reason not to fav it! aces!

It does look clean and fresh - not historic really but the history is. Didn't know you had an earthquake in 1969!
