Skye Low Key by salza

Skye Low Key

My get-pushed challenge from Melissa @mej2011 - For your "Get Pushed" challenge, I would like for you to take a low key portrait.

I have really struggled with this challenge! I'm not sure this one really works very well. Any critique welcome!

Skye seems to be jumping out of the dark. Great for your challenge.

Hi Sally, only thing I find a bit disconcerting is that the ears have blended into the background - but I guess with a subject like that in low-key your options are limited. Great effort!!

Great focus! I like the dark background.

I really like this. Something which you can experiment with, is to clone the blurred bits of white coat in the background to black, to leave you just with the sharply focused face. I'm not quite sure how it will work and if it will be an improvement, but it's worth a try.

@ericdibosco Eric that sounds like something worth trying out. I also want to try to bring back the definition of her ears but at this point have no idea how to!

I think you did well with it and couldn't really think of anything to offer. But I like Eric's idea. Good shot!

@salza I don't know what your original looks like and if you took it in RAW, but I'm afraid there is just too little light on the ears to bring out any detail. I think you will just end up with a lot of noise and grain!

@georgews George I totally agree wth you! I debated posting this shot for that very reason! I think I'm going to hve another go at editing it to see if I can get some ear definition back.

@ericdibosco Eric, the original is in raw and taken otside in the middle of the day in full sun! I have pondered whether a dark grey background instead of black might work better for this one.
