Yes, this Head of a Crucified Christ is so perfect that according to a 350 year-old legend it was sculptured by angels. The Ta’ Giesu ( Maltese short for Our Lady of Jesus) Crucified Christ was first put on show for the devotion of the faithful at around 1630. It was carved in Olive wood by Frate Umile Pintorno from Palermo – known to be the best artist of sacred art works of his time. The image of Christ, as carved, is a macabre show of suffering. This Crucifix has been venerated ever since it was shown for the first time and is considered by many as being miraculous. Contrary to custom, the arms are not separate from and joined to the body but and integral part of the body itself. The head is separate and joined to the main body.
The beautiful legend says that Frate Umile could not decide how to sculpture an appropriate head for the figure. When he was so tired contemplating on this issue he fell asleep and when he woke up he found that the head had been miraculously carved by angels.
Nice processing - my opinion is that Frate Umile dranked or smoked something for inspiration and he then did a great job on the head. Afterwards he had a nap and when he woke up, he forgot what had happened. Good excuse for some church propaganda.
